I am a Christian, wife, and mother. My love for working in higher education began while I was in college at an HBCU. I worked in the Orientation & Advisement Office and Student Activities. I volunteered as a student representative on the Judicial Affairs Board. I was an elected and paid member of the Student Government Association. After graduating, I worked as an Educational Talent Search Counselor which is a federal TRIO program. I briefly worked as a high school guidance counselor. Later, I re-entered the higher education workforce as a part-time counselor for a Single Parent Program at a community college. When the grant ended, I worked in other capacities at the institution with dual enrollment and career counseling. It forged the opportunity for me to obtain a full-time position as an interim professional counselor at another community college where I have been for the last 16 years. My position has changed from interim professional counselor to professional counselor then director of counseling and most recently director of student assistance and intervention services. I provided oversight for academic counseling, supervised counselors and advisors as well as career coaches for local high schools, scheduled and taught our college success skills classes, oversaw recruiting, disability support services, and our student success centers which provided tutoring. I directed our early alert program. I currently chair our Emergency Fund Committee and Academic Integrity Committee. I am the judicial affairs officer. I am the lead for our new Single Stop initiative which is designed to be a “One Stop Shop” for students to get connected to resources that will help them attain financial security. I am empathetic and passionate about helping others find financial peace in their lives.
